St. Augustine Tower is located just 500meters from the famous Basilica of Old Goa . Once upon a time a vibrant & imposing church, now only a part of the front facade remains. Scale of the ruins are magnificent. One can only imagine the full glory of the finished church. A must see in old Goa for history buffs. Impressive ruins. You have to visit when you are in Old Goa. Still stands high & telling glorious past of Goa. 46 meter high Auguistine church tower & ruins of church is a UNESCO world heritage site. The most spectacular monument of Goa was built in 1602 by 12 Augustian monks. In 1835 Portuguese expelled Augustians resulted church was abandoned & later on ruined. This is worth visit monument of old Goa along with other churches. This tower almost in the ruin is normally given the miss by the usual tourists to Old Goa. All the more reason for you to visit this church in solitude.
History: Augustine friars who arrived in Goa in 1587 AD built a massive church known as Church of Our Lady of Grace in 1602 and this church was possibly the biggest in Goa. The church was abandoned in 1835 AD due to the repressive policies of Portuguese rulers resulting in neglect of the church and collapse of its vault in 1842. The church was destroyed except its facade, half of which fell down in 1931 and 1938 leaving half of the tower which can be seen today. Even in its present collapsed stage, the tower looks grand and tells the story of the time when it must have been really imposing. Worth spending sometime when in Goa.
